Awards will be allocated according to the following criteria:
Applications must satisfy most or all of the criteria if they are to qualify for funding.
All applicants must be male. However, they do not have to be part of male only parties. Participants in mixed parties are considered on an equal basis. Joint ventures with the Adventure Trust for Girls are actively encouraged.
Applicants must have reached the age of 11 but not exceeded 21. Please note, this criterion is applicable to the first day of the expedition/activity, not to the date of application.
The home address of the applicant must be within the area of benefit. The area of benefit encompasses that within 8 miles of Exmouth Town Hall (excluding the west of the River Exe), and extends to include the whole area administered by East Devon District Council. This will be adjudicated by using the Pain Trust area of benefit map as the definitive point of reference. If the applicant does not live on or within the boundary outlined on the map then the application will be rejected.
Applicants in full time education will need to declare the address of their financial provider (i.e. the parent/guardian); this will be taken as their home address irrespective of where they reside during the course of their studies. The home address must fall within the defined area of benefit for the application to be considered.
Students not financially dependent upon their parents/guardians will have their applications assessed on merit.
All activities must include substantial elements of travel and/or adventure in order to qualify for support.
Elements for consideration:
Activities should be undertaken preferably as part of a group, although single applications will be considered on the basis of the nature of the adventure itself.
The Trust does not support activities which could be considered to be a part of the National Curriculum.
Extra curricular activities may be considered for funding if they fulfil the aims and objectives of the Trust.
It is the objectives of the activity which are considered as important, rather than nature of the activity which achieves these goals. As a result, the Trust also supports special interest projects such as archaeological excavations or photographic expeditions as long as the package fulfils the objectives required.
Working holidays will be considered for funding, providing that they are activities which foster team spirit and encourage the development of leadership skills.
Applications for activities undertaken as part of a family holiday will be considered on their individual merit.
The Trust does not support applications regarding competitive sport or the pursuit of excellence in sport. Competitive sport is defined as a sporting activity with recognised rules, regulations and leagues. The Trust does not fund individuals who are participating in national and international sporting events.
All activities supported by the Pain Trust must conform with current safety legislation and, wherever possible, should be supervised by a qualified leader. Details of the elements must be outlined in the application.

Certain core activities must be overseen by nationally recognised qualified instructors, with an appropriate instructor to pupil ratio.
All applicants must be covered by adequate insurance during the course of the adventure/expedition. The details of insurance provision must be clearly stated on the application form.
Applications will not be considered unless they are accompanied by a detailed itinerary with costs.
The Trustees reserve the right to alter the accommodation used by an applicant if they feel that a more suitable economic alternative could be found. However, the applications package will be considered as a whole, not just in terms of nature and cost of accommodation.
All applicants must show adequate evidence of background research into their proposed expedition and this should be incorporated into the letter accompanying the application form.Repeat applications will be considered as long as they fulfil the objectives for funding.
Top-up payments will not be considered under any circumstances.
Retrospective applications will not be considered under any circumstances.
All applications should be submitted at least 16 days before a meeting in order for them to be vetted, and for all necessary information to be obtained ready for discussion by the Trustees. Dates of Trustees’ meeting are published on the Trust’s web site (www.pain-trust.org.uk) and enclosed with application packs.
The Trustees will only consider an application if it meets all necessary criteria. They are under no obligation to fund an application.
